Fine Books Auction: Tarot History

Just got word of a huge auction coming up. And when I say huge, I mean huge. Stuart R. Kaplan should be well known to most of us for his outstanding Tarot Encyclopedias. These books are truly amazing. I’ve seen them but still don’t own my own set (sob).

But I digress. You want to know more about this auction, don’t you? Continue reading “Fine Books Auction: Tarot History”

SPREAD: A Walk In The Woods

One of my favorite Tarot haunts is Aeclectic Tarot. AT and 78Friends both provide me with much needed interaction with other students of Tarot.  I often find really intriguing spreads there from other Tarot enthusiasts who, like me, love to design layouts.

This one was posted October 10, 2005. I found it six days later. It was love at first read. I did this for myself, my partner at that time, her children, our friends–pretty much anyone who wasn’t moving faster than I could shuffle and draw.  I wanted to test it, you see. It simply wasn’t possible that this simple spread was so accurate. I couldn’t believe it.

And I was Continue reading “SPREAD: A Walk In The Woods”

Deck Review: Deviant Moon Tarot

Deviant Moon Tarot

Publisher: US Games Systems; 1st edition (June 24, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1572816112

Idiosyncratic is the first word that comes to my mind when I looked at this deck. The next was…well, in a word, WIERD. I think that artist Patrick Valenza might take that as a compliment. This is not a deck for everyone. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

In the mini-biography that comes on a card with this deck, Valenza is said to have the hobbies of tiptoeing through graveyards and exploring abandoned buildings. This deck is our way of tiptoeing through Valenza’s creative process–thankfully not a graveyard or abandoned. Continue reading “Deck Review: Deviant Moon Tarot”

Deck Review: Fantastical Creatures Tarot

Fantastical Creatures Tarot

Lisa Hunt & DJ Conway

US Games

2007

Another creation from a solid tarot team is the Fantastical Creatures Tarot.  From the obvious power of the Winged Lion standing as the Sun to the delicate fairy who sit by the Ace of Cups, these cards are mesmerizing.

Hunt’s artwork has long been a favorite of mine. She has a way of imbuing her art with intricate images that demand your attention. You may know her as the artist of the Celtic Dragons Tarot or the Animals Divine. She is well known in the Tarot world for good reason.

On the Fantastical Creatures Tarot website, Lisa (who holds a tabby who must have been the model for the Magician) says of painting this lovely watercolor deck: Continue reading “Deck Review: Fantastical Creatures Tarot”

Deck Review: Faerie Tarot

Faerie Tarot
Faerie Tarot

The lovely, whimsical Faerie Tarot was published June 2008 by US Games. Author and artist, Nathalie Hertz has outdone herself this time. I recently reviewed her Vampire Tarot which was an intriguing deck that I didn’t think would find huge popularity because of the theme. However this deck should find a very different reception.

Let me start with saying that I don’t like Continue reading “Deck Review: Faerie Tarot”

DECK REVIEW: Tarot Of A Moon Garden

Come journey to the moon with me. I have a passion for dragonflies. Go ahead. Make the “wow, I never knew” remarks. Get them all out of your system. I’ll wait.

Done? Good! Now back to my dragonflies. I was searching for a tarot deck that had dragonflies. I got a Google hit on something called Tarot of a Moon Garden. And then I couldn’t find the darn thing! I searched all over. Finally, I found it and pounced on it. Then of course, I decided to review it!
My first view of this deck was of the Fool. And my first impression was “Awww, they could have done so much more with the color.” Continue reading “DECK REVIEW: Tarot Of A Moon Garden”
