Mesquite Tarot: An Interview with Aleisha and Bronwyn

This could also be called “getting back to things I used to love to do.” When I was editor of the American Tarot Association Quarterly Journal, I developed an interview for those who had created decks. The twist on the normal interview was that I requested it be answered by pulling cards from their creation, Tarot deck, itself. So, in essence, their creation of the artist/author became their voice.

Recently I saw a deck on Kickstarter (I blame many people for telling me about this deck but Siobhan gets first dibs…lol. Check out her Gemini ‘Scopes while you are there.) This deck was by two women in Austin, Texas which was an immediate plus since I used to live in ATX. But what really grabbed me was the clean lines and subdued color pallette. Typically I like brighter colors and am really drawn to the art of the  likes of Tarot visionary Lisa Hunt. But I do enjoy black and white decks and less vivid decks as well. So I backed this deck. (FULL DISCLOSURE: This deck is fully funded already.)

Mesquite Tarot Deck
Mesquite Tarot Deck

The name of the deck made me grin. If you’ve been to Texas, you have probably seen mesquite. It’s a popular tree for using in fires and barbeques. It’s also a tenacious tree that can grow in some pretty harsh condition. I decided to interview the creators, Aleisha and Bronwyn about their Mesquite Tarot. Please note that some of the cards pictured here may be prototypes meaning there could be some changes in the final product.

What card describes you as a writer or artist? If you are both, please choose a card for each one.

Aleisha as a writer: The Fool

The Fool Mesquite Tarot
The Fool Mesquite Tarot

Very appropriate.  In writing and in life, I am definitely figuring it all out as I go along, just like everybody else. I’ve approached writing this book with a lot of playfulness and curiosity: watching where it leads, feeling open to possibility, having fun. It’s easy to feel a lot of fear when it comes to creating; it’s been an intention to energize more of the imagination and childlike wonder of key 0.

Bronwyn as an artist: Three of Wands

A huge part of what I do as a visual artist is constantly attempt to view things from as many different angles as possible. I’m always working to put aside what I may think I know, and take a new approach- one that comes more from within. A lot of that work includes taking risks, being confident, and accepting the role of a leader, which always comes along with uncharted territory. My eyes stay open to new opportunities, new projects, and new ways to push myself as a creator.

If I were to ask your deck to describe you, what card would it use?

The World: Wow, how lovely.

We’re of the thought that the world is a living being, that our connectedness with nature and each other is an essential part of ourselves and is necessary to experiencing the fullness of being alive. We are doing our best to promote clarity and kindness on the planet and we think tarot is a pretty great tool for that.

What card would your deck use to describe itself?

Ten of Wands: We relate to the element of balance in the ten of wands, the focus and determination that this card encompasses. Being present step by step, even in challenge.

What card describes your favorite piece of creating this deck?

Nine of Cups: Overflow and abundance. This card hints at the material– we’re often airy, in the world of ideas. Connecting to the tangible has been a really special aspect of the creative process.

What card describes what your favorite questions to answer are?

Page of Cups: Mesquite does gravitate toward the idealistic, dreamy, the poetic.

What card describes what you think are the most valuable lessons you learned while creating this deck?

Knight of Wands: From the onset, we’ve approached the deck creation with a lot of action and momentum. Part of our motivation in running a Kickstarter campaign was to create externalized energy that would help us get through some of the challenges in bringing it to fruition. I think we were able to harness some of the knight’s boldness, and like him, we were able to move forward in action and ambition. Even in imperfection, the fearlessness and boldness is something we’re grateful to be learning.

What card describes your best use as a tarot deck?

Lovers Mesquite Tarot
Lovers Mesquite Tarot

Knight of Pentacles: Though Mesquite has a gentle sensibility, its use is rooted and active.

What card describes your greatest weakness?

Eight of Pentacles: It’s a bit like a classic job interview, haha– indeed our weakness is often in perfectionism. Like many creators, we are prone to being hyper-critical of our own work.

What card describes your greatest strength?

Five of Cups: We are good at being resourceful, working with what we have even when it’s not as much as we’d like.

What card is your most favorite? Why?

Eight of Cups: This is actually one of the first cards in the tarot I ever made contact with. It appeared years ago and was a strong message that I needed to turn away and do some searching. A reminder that leaving things behind isn’t always an easy path, but often a necessary one.

What card is your least favorite? Why?

Queen of Arrows: Hmm, this is a tricky one because we actually really love this card. The queen’s clarity and connection to truth has been feeling like an especially helpful energy to harness.

Which card do you think needs to be studied the most?

The Chariot: When the energy of the Chariot is in balance, it’s such a powerful and directed card. There’s definitely lots of Chariot energy in the world right now, but it’s not always used in a clear and balanced way. Definitely plenty of study we can all do w/r/t the Chariot.

What card describes your personal creativity?

Two of Pentacles: Again, the theme of balance and playfulness emerges!

Who or what inspired you to create a deck and why?

Six of Cups (prototype) Mesquite Tarot
Six of Cups (prototype) Mesquite Tarot

Five of Cups: A great lens to understand inspiration. As we progressed in our personal tarot practice and began creating our own deck, we noticed our relationship with tarot evolving into a space where we could access clarity and optimism. Rather than being focused on the things that are broken, we wanted to look at what was full. We wanted to provide a tool for seeing solution when so much of the world seems to be staring and what’s been overturned.

What upcoming projects can you tell us about?

Nine of Pentacles We’re in a stage of planting more seeds, nurturing and growing as artists and creators. At this stage, we want to honor Mesquite and keep our energy directed towards making it the best it can be. We feel a lot of momentum building and are also excited to continue creative collaboration. Beginning to gestate more ideas for expansive projects that foster kindness and compassion.

Draw one card. Tell us what secret habit this card reveals about you.

The Hermit: The two of us met as housemates, and one of the secret habits we share is creative hermitude. There’s a fertile buzz in the house when we are both working, sometimes collaborating in the kitchen or in the breakfast nook, sometimes alone in our respective bedrooms. The homebody tendencies have made our house a hive of productivity and generative vibes. We are able to be hermits in community.

Do back this one, y’all. I predict it will be a keeper.

Let’s recalibrate your joy. If you have fifteen minutes, I can help. What’s holding you back?

I hope you will join me this week as I talk with about the number one thing that kills your affirmation work.

Have you seen Tierney Sadler’s The Deck of 1000 Spreads: Your Tarot Toolkit for Creating the Perfect Spread for Any Situation yet? I just got my copy. It’s really good for those times when I get stuck on what and how to ask the Tarot.

Also, if you are a lover of new Tarot, I invite you to check out Lupa Greenwolf’s Indiegogo project for her Tarot of Bones. It’s already fully funded (in less than a week). I predict this deck is going to be one you will wish you had gotten in on. I’m eagerly waiting for the finished product. Yes, I bought two decks. You know me! I like backups.

CARD OF THE WEEK: KING OF CUPS [inlinetweet prefix=”CARD OF THE WEEK” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]It’s a great week to flex our emotional muscles. Make sure that [/inlinetweet]you are focusing on compassion for self as well as compassion for others. We grow exponentially when we give to others with an open, loving heart. Imagine your compassionate self is a shark–you must keep compassion moving to keep it fresh and alive within you.

AQUARIUS THE HIEROPHANT [inlinetweet prefix=”AQUARIUS” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Sometimes spiritual needs require travel. You already know those needs require [/inlinetweet]fierce focus. Bow down to your own spiritual self. Honor what you need. Make time for filling that need. This card urges you to incorporate your personal spirituality in more of your every day life. This is a card that requires your attention.

PISCES KNIGHT OF SWORDS [inlinetweet prefix=”PISCES” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Magpie energy may overwhelm you this week. It’s okay to say no to all the pretty[/inlinetweet], shiny new things. Get your mind into play on things that are already within your reach. No need to gather more ideas, tech toys, pens, etc. A better use of your efforts will be to focus on working the ideas you have, resetting the toys and rewriting the stories alrady started.

ARIES THE FOOL [inlinetweet prefix=”ARIES” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Taking risks can feel foolish sometimes. But this week’s challenge is for you to do stupid [/inlinetweet]things and make people believe you are smart. You know the challenges, the constraints, the choices. Make the ones that have the biggest payoff for you. Brashness will serve you well this week. Do tackle something new if that opportunity should arise.

Animalis Os Fortuna Queen of SwordsTAURUS QUEEN OF SWORDS [inlinetweet prefix=”TAURUS” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Whose needs must be met now? What do you require [/inlinetweet]from those in your life? Are they not focused on your needs? Ask yourself this. Are you giving them the space to see that you have needs? Are you letting them focus on you or are you doing what you always do? Taking care of them first? Let them have this opportunity to grow by letting them understand your own need.

GEMINI THE SUN [inlinetweet prefix=”GEMINI” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Splash a litte more in those puddles. Laugh a little harder at that viral video because [/inlinetweet]self-love is super sexy. When you indulge in the joy of the work, the laughter of your life, you are going to get seen–get noticed. Like someone is shining a big spotlight on you, your week is going to be all about showing your stuff. So shake that sexy butt. Shine!

CANCER FOUR OF PENTACLES [inlinetweet prefix=”CANCER” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Oh my yes, you do work hard for the money, don’t you. But have you [/inlinetweet]stopped to consider what you are getting for all that hard work? Money is nice. Kudos are terrific. However, if you aren’t allowing yourself a few niceties as reward for your efforts, you may not be reaping the full benefit. Don’t hold on so tight to your wealth that you can’t share a little, mmmkay?

LEO TEN OF WANDS [inlinetweet prefix=”LEO” tweeter=”@Tarotscopes” suffix=”..more #tarot”]So many things need to be done. It’s a great week for you to create a master to-do [/inlinetweet]list as well as daily “must get done” lists. Passion will see you through but the Universe says you may be bone-tired by the end of this week. So on those “must get done” lists? Yeah, make sure you include some down time to avoid mandatory down time. You follow me?

Animalis Os Fortuna Two of Pentacles
Animalis Os Fortuna

VIRGO TWO OF PENTACLES [inlinetweet prefix=”VIRGO” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Don’t be surprised when you get caught between a rock and a really [/inlinetweet] awesome place. Even the rock is going to be one of those “hell yeah” challenges that rev your earth self up, Virgo. Choose the one that requires more nibbling than full mouthfuls. Your energy this week may be best suited to gathering intel over ground force strikes. Hooyah!

LIBRA THREE OF CUPS [inlinetweet prefix=”LIBRA” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Social gatherings are going to be coming in fast. Take some time to decide now how [/inlinetweet]much energy you have to give to that. Your friends want to be around you because you are a charming companion. Just make sure you don’t party yourself into missing work and other obligations. Have fun, but monitor your own personal need for quiet, please.

SCORPIO FIVE OF SWORDS [inlinetweet prefix=”SCORPIO” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Are you sharing the pretty? Even peacocks squabble,[/inlinetweet] darling. Don’t be so focused on your own self-worth that you lose your focus on others. They need to feel pretty too. Make sure you aren’t being so focused on you that it turns into selfishness. Others won’t appreciate that energy. You may find that some walk away. So let’s share the pretty this week, okay?

SAGITTARIUS TWO OF SWORDS [inlinetweet prefix=”SAGITTARIUS” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Crow magic is old magic. But you may find yourself split between wanting [/inlinetweet]new as well as old magic. Make sure you don’t get locked into the place of making choices. Sometimes you get stuck on what to choose so you lose out on both things. This is a good week to set your mind up to make choices rather than dither. Getting honest with yourself is the best path for this week.

Animalis Os Fortuna Justice
Animalis Os Fortuna

CAPRICORN JUSTICE [inlinetweet prefix=”CAPRICORN” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”… more #tarot”]Balance is not a good idea this week. It’s pretty much an [/inlinetweet]imperative for you. Mind your p’s and q’s so that you don’t add a legal battle to your week. And if you do get a ticket, be honest about the cause. When you get out of balance at work, it affects home. And vice versa, sweeties. A wide stance makes you harder to knock down.

Remember to seek joy, y’all. Pass it on! I want to hear from you if you are ready to kick the negativity habit in the tender bits. Let’s get started today to create a plan for you that takes you from feeling alone to feeling alive.

Hype, Reality + Responsibility

Today is about hyperbole vs reality. Who’s responsible?

[Tweet “Today is about hyperbole vs reality. Who’s responsible?”]

Tarot of the Zirkus Magi Governor of Rings
Tarot of the Zirkus Magi

Today’s #affirmation is brought to us by a man who thought he could take down P.T. Barnum. He was so huge that they called him the father of the modern circus. He single-handedly brought Jumbo the elephant to America.

Okay, so a lot of that is hyperbole…or to use the more common shortened version–hype.

This Governor of Rings is James Anthony Bailey who was born as a McGuiness. His career as a circus owner/ringmaster was legendary. He had his own show then joined with P.T. Barnum. They eventually joined with the Ringling Brothers to form what is a still active circus troupe.

Many of us dislike circuses now for the treatment of animals. I’m going to put that aside for now. Instead, I want to shine a light on this card. The traditional name is the King of Pentacles. He is often seen as a bit of a stick-in-the-mud Mr. Banks type by me.

His role in the Tarot is often that of taskmaster, banker, rule enforcer. Here he’s been given a different hat (top hat, even) to wear. This man is now a ringmaster of a circus. He must do more than point out the amazing acts and beautiful girls. He also is responsible for the overall financial success of his endeavors.

And more than that? He is the ultimate yes-or-no in many people’s lives. Their livelihood depends on this man. It cannot be an easy thing to have that much responsibility. I imagine he understood “heavy is the head that wears the crown” on a very personal level.

Responsibility happens.

I am responsible for making sure my bills get paid, my animals get the food and medical attention they need and so on. Some days I’d like to chuck it all to go live in a cave. But the reality is, responsibility exists.

So that brings us to today’s affirmation:

Today I am responsible for my own happiness. Today I remember to choose to be in a good mood. Today I remember to celebrate my ability to be responsible. Loved and loving, I love each of you.

Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on!

The Wooden Tarot Fool
The Wooden Tarot

#affirmation Some will hate today’s card, I’m sure. Me? I love it. It captures the message beautifully. What’s that message? Oh the one of taking risks, leaping without looking and assuming all is possible despite the odds.

Yep, it’s the Fool. And what an interesting fool it is! Here is a field mouse ready to take off on his or her next great adventure. The traditional stick features a flower as a bag. The cliff? Well that’s a snake. A boa from the looks of it. I love that the snake has moss and growth on it to represent the leap from security into the unknown.

Will the mouse make it? Will the snake win this time? Only the jump will answer that question.

Terrific interpretation of the Fool card. Swartz nailed this one. There’s danger and optimism clearly detailed here. I think this has to go on my top ten list of favorite Fool cards.

Today’s affirmation:

I am a fool. I am my own best friend. I encourage myself to take risks and make leaps of faith. I trust in the path I have chosen. I know that I will survive whatever is in front of me. Loved and loving, I love each of you.

Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on.

Of Gods And Aces

Of Gods And Aces — A god, an ace and a bone walk into a bar. What’s next?

[Tweet “A god, an ace and a bone walk into a bar. What’s next?”]

The Wooden Tarot Ace of Bones
The Wooden Tarot

#affirmation Sticking with the Wooden Tarot, today’s card is another of the ones that gives me pause. Actually it is one of four that give me pause for the same reason.

Aces, to me, are seed energy. They are the potential of the suit. A.L. Swartz has chosen to rename the aces to god. So we have the God of Bones today rather than the Ace.

Of course, as I write it out, as usual I come to an understanding. The all seeing eye in the triangle (a nod to the Illuminati I think) floats above a generic figure where hands float with a bone between them.

Seed energy. Beginnings. Potentials. This is the Earth suit in this deck. I would call it Coins or Pentacles in a more traditional deck.

I am reminded of the Christian story about God creating Eve from Adam’s rib. While that’s not a rib bone (unless I miss my guess), there is a magic waiting to happen here.

So many cultures use bones. My friend Fiona Robinson at Open Roads Coaching does bone readings even today.

Okay, A.L., I think I understand why gods are aces in your deck. Well played, sir. Well played indeed.

Today’s affirmation:

I am potential. I am possibility. I am the beginning of my own next great event. I breathe in ability. I breathe out creativity. I begin again today. Loved and loving, I love each of you.

Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on.

Balancing Otters+Third Eyes

Today’s card from @gardenskull is not one I really get…yet. What can you add to my interpretation?

[Tweet “Today’s card from @gardenskull is not one I really get…yet. What can you add to my interpretation?”]

The Wooden Tarot Temperance
The Wooden Tarot

#affirmation So today’s card is one that I am not so sure about. Working with the Wooden #Tarot again, I have drawn Temperance. Artist A.L. Swartz has gone off on a tangent with this one.

First, let me tell you how much I love otters. One of my favorite necklaces features the Three of Water from the Gaian Tarot. It is three otters. This otter as Temperance gives me pause.

Temperance is a card of alchemy and change for me. It is about balancing all elements to come to something new. It can also be about moderation. Normally you see land and water with this image. Here you don’t.

An otter swims past on its back. The third eye is open but partially hooded as if there is some inner seeking going on. The otter is surrounded by water or is that air. It puts me in mind of a shroud–maybe the caul the seer child is said to have at birth. two lily-like flowers are on either side.

As a land/water animal, the otter works for that part of temperance. And it is in a restful state which speaks to me of that balance of life–the pausing between playing and working. The surrounding shroud of white and grey might be the veil, or more correctly, the Veil. Perhaps this otter is on the other side peeking through.

I will have to work with this one a bit more to fully grasp what the artist’s message is here. I do like the card though–simply because it has an otter. I’m easy.

Today’s affirmation:

I walk my path knowing balance. I appreciate the ups and the downs. I honor my grief for it leads me into joy. I honor my joy for it leads me into grief. I understand the importance of balance. Loved and loving, I love each of you.

Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on.

Let’s check out this week’s TarotsCopes, shall we? Yes, I think I will stick with Tarot Copes as a new name.

First, here’s a round-up of this past week’s post in case you missed them.

CARD OF THE WEEK: Five of Swords What squirms in your mind? What needs to be cut away? Releasing self-doubt is the key. Work on focus.

AQUARIUS EIGHT OF SWORDS Challenging? Yes, this week will be, but you have done the work. Unfold, blossom, spread your wings. You’ll be fine.

PISCES STRENGTH Remember the key to true success is to control your reactions. Thinking first is best. Breathing is better. Act don’t react.

ARIES FIVE OF WANDS Competition can improve you as long as you are competing against yourself first. The others are fun, but you are your biggest challenge.

TAURUS SON OF PENTACLES Money moves forward. Maybe slowly, but it is forward. Look where you were 6 months ago. Celebrate the steady measured growth.

GEMINI FOUR OF WANDS Stick close to home. Tackle that to-do list around the house. Time to celebrate in small ways so invite friends over.

CANCER HIEROPHANT Honey, if you are breaking your own rules, who’s really to blame? Rewrite what’s not working. Stick with what is working.WildUnknown_3cards

LEO FIVE OF PENTACLES Time to dehead fading roses. Let go of those who are sucking you dry. Focus on those who give back. Hard times pass.

VIRGO DAUGHTER OF WANDS Growth. Look to your personal passions for ways to bring meaning to your life. Get fired up and get started now.

LIBRA DEVIL Many temptations to do the wrong thing. Stay strong. Stay on track. Don’t let your base needs overrule your head. Just say no.

SCORPIO SON OF WANDS Rise up to meet the challenges. Face your fears head on to win. Movement and action are your key words. Get going.

SAGITTARIUS THREE OF SWORDS Thoughts of past hurts can take you down. Understand that it is over. It’s done. Betrayal hurts. Don’t wallow.

CAPRICORN SIX OF COINS Memories serve you well. Reflect on happiest time. Recreate them in the here and now? Sure you can. Family is the key.

Today’s deck? is bringing me joy. Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on.

Grubby Fingernails + Stained Knees

Is it shit or is it growth? I get confused.

[Tweet “Is it shit or is it growth? I get confused.”]

Tarot of Trees
Tarot of Trees

#affirmation Here’s to growth. It ain’t easy. Some times it ain’t pretty. Often you turn up with grubby finger nails, stained knees and dirt on your face.

A lot of what I do on a personal level feels like shoveling shit. Surprised to hear me say that? Well, bear with me.

I am moody. I can be a bitch. I can snark with the best of them. My Scorpio moon says I can out snark most.

I don’t like that self. I like the self who is cheerful. Who laughs more than she cries. Who makes seeking joy a priority.

Even when I have to fight up from all the shit I pile on top of myself.

Shit: I am not joyful enough.
Shit: I am not skinny enough.
Shit: I am too angry.
Shit: I am too mean.

It’s all shit I shovel. And the target? Me myself and I.

But, like that donkey in that old joke, I have to keep shaking that shit off. I have to use it as material for growth. I have to burst forth stretching for the sky.

I have to grow. Grubby fingernails and all, I have to keep growing.

Today’s affirmation is:
I grow because I need to grow. I grow because I want to grow. I grow because it is the only alternative I can live with. Loved and loving, I love each of you. Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on!
