Tarot & Food: The Fool’s Blueberry Fool

I’ve been trying to come up with a recipe that would be right for the Fool. This card is more than what starts the Tarot. Here is the journey-taker of the Tarot. The Fool is zero because there is no number to assign this wanderer.

Then it occurred to me. I was trying too hard. I needed to be more optimistic and, like the fool, a bit literal. I finally realized what I’d been missing. The Fool’s recipe was a fool! Fool is a British dessert that may have come from a French word meaning “to press”. And that amused me because the Fool does ever press on in his journey.

So here is a delightfully simple dessert for you to try.

    The Fool’s Blueberry Fool

  • 1 pint (2 cups) fresh blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 pint whipping cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Wash the blueberries and remove any over- or underripe ones. Do NOT wash the blueberries until you are ready to cook with them.

Place the berries in a medium saucepan and stir in the water and sugar. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until the berries are soft and have released their juices. Remove the pan from the heat and set it aside to cool. If you are in a hurry like the Fool, you can transfer this to another bowl to speed up the cooling process.

Meanwhile, pour the whipping cream into a medium mixing bowl and beat it with an electric mixer on high speed until soft peaks form, about 1 minute. Mix in the vanilla extract. If you are like me, use the Mexican vanilla if you have some. Nothing beats it for flavor.

Pour the cooled blueberry sauce over the whipped cream and gently fold the mixture until the blueberries and the cream are well combined. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, then spoon the dessert into serving dishes.

You can share this with up to 6-8 people or you can hoard it all for yourself.

The Fool encourages us to take a step into the unknown. Try something a little different for dessert. Whip up a Fool’s Fool.
