So there is this thing. This project. It’s called Project T.A.R.O.T. You can learn more about it here.

They put out a call for doing readings on the Oscars. So here is my reading. I thought about pulling a certain group of cards out with one being the star but I couldn’t figure out how to do that. So I went with what I know. Shuffle 78 cards. Draw one for each entry in the category. Interpret and pick a winner. Repeat for all the categories.

Let’s get started, shall we? I’m using my Gaian Tarot for this experiment.

BEST PICTURE

  • The Artist – Elder of Fire
  • The Descendants– Child of Air
  • Producers Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close – Four of Water
  • The Help – Lovers
  • Hugo – 3 of Water
  • Midnight in Paris – 10 of Air
  • Moneyball – 7 of Earth
  • The Tree of Life – 2 of Water
  • War Horse – 5 of Fire

Well that’s a bit hard, but in this case, just going on intuition, I’m going with the Child of Air and calling for The Decendants. This is because of all the cards, it shows someone being chosen. It was hard not to say Hugo since that film got the 3 of Water (Seek joy, y’all). Or The Help with the Lovers, but I have to make a decision. The Descendants.

Actor in a Leading Role

  • Demián Bichir – Death
  • George Clooney – 5 of Earth
  • Jean Dujardin – 2 of Air
  • Gary Oldman – Elder of Air
  • Brad Pitt – The Star

Snort. Any questions about who the Gaian thinks is the winner in this group? Yeah. Me neither. Brad Pitt is my prediction.

Actor in a Supporting Role

  • Kenneth Branagh – Death
  • Jonah Hill – 5 of Earth
  • Nick Nolte – Explorer of Air
  • Christopher Plummer- 4 of Water
  • Max von Sydow – Ace of Air

Well, I laughed when I saw Branagh and Hill get the same cards that Bichir and Clooney got (and I swear I shuffled!). But for this, even though I thought it might be Nolte with that Explorer of Air, I’m going to have to give my nod to the talented Max von Sydow with the Ace of Air.

Actress in a Leading Role

  • Glenn Close – The Tree
  • Viola Davis – 8 of Cups
  • Rooney Mara– 6 of Earth
  • Meryl Streep – Moon
  • Michelle Williams – 7 of Fire

Well this one isn’t clear at all. The 8 of Cups could indicate Viola letting go of old baggage and finally being recognized but of all of these, it looks like Rooney Mara with the 6 of Earth as the winner. Darn it! I wanted Glenn Close for her role. LOL Hard not to redraw cards sometimes. The Moon and Tree are strong Major Arcana cards but the card most like winning is the 6 of Earth for me.

Actress in a Supporting Role

  • Bérénice Bejo – 8 of Air
  • Jessica Chastain – Fool
  • Melissa McCarthy – 4 of Water
  • Janet McTeer – 5 of Air
  • Octavia Spencer – 6 of Fire

Again a hard call. The Fool is the seeker but this time I think the 6 of Fire will be victorious. Octavia Spencer is my call for this Oscar.

Animated Feature Film

  • A Cat in Paris – Lovers
  • Chico & Rita – 3 of Air
  • Kung Fu Panda 2– Ace of Water
  • Puss in Boots – Elder of Water
  • Rango – 10 of Earth

Okay then! Lovers is the strongest but that Ace of Water makes me give my vote to Kung Fu Panda 2. And that’s not just because I’m mad for the Black that is Jack! No really!

ART DIRECTION

  • The Artist – Explorer of Air
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – Guardian of Air
  • Hugo-10 of Water
  • Midnight in Paris – Elder of Fire
  • War Horse – Lovers

Wow. I’m so torn on this one. But, I’m going to go with Hugo since that film did get the traditional “and they all lived happily ever after” card. Hard to turn down War Horse with the Lovers, though.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

  • The Artist – Elder of Earth
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – The Tree
  • Hugo– Justice
  • The Tree of Life – 4 of Air
  • War Horse – 6 of Earth

Well, I was going to say Hugo until that 6 of Earth showed up. Now I’m going to go with War Horse for cinematography. No, I’ve changed my mind. Justice just looks like an Oscar statuette to me! LOL Hugo!

COSTUME DESIGN

  • Anonymous – 5 of Fire
  • The Artist – Magician
  • Hugo – 7 of Water
  • Jane Eyre – 5 of Water
  • W.E. – Star

Hmmm, the Magician would have suggested The Artist but there’s that Star again. W.E. for the win!

DIRECTING

  • The Artist – Child of Earth
  • The Descendants – 4 of Fire
  • Hugo – Child of Fire
  • Midnight in Paris – 8 of Earth
  • The Tree of Life – Sun

I have to admit that I will be damned surprised if The Tree of Life takes this category, but the Sun card predicts that it will.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

  • Hell and Back Again – Death
  • If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth – Ace of Fire
  • Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory– Priestess
  • Pina – 3 of Air
  • Undefeated – 5 of Earth

Hmmm. I thought the Ace of Fire but then the Priestess seems to be offering something so I am going for Paradise Lost 3: Puragtory as the winner in this category.

Documentary Short Subject

  • The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement– 9 of Earth
  • God Is the Bigger Elvis – Teacher
  • Incident in New Baghdad – 5 of Fire
  • Saving Face – Priestess
  • The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom – Ace of Earth

This is a hard one for me because we have three cards offering things (Teacher, HPS, 9 of Earth) but the Ace of Earth is the monetary start. I think I’m going with my gut here and call Barber of Birmingham the winner. That’s due to the 9 of Earth being the card of satisfaction and Joanna being in that lovely gown.

FILM EDITING

  • The Artist – Guardian of Water
  • The Descendants – 3 of Water
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo– 9 of Earth
  • Hugo – 6 of Water
  • Moneyball – Explorer of Fire

So, this one is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for the same reason as above.

Foreign Language Film

  • Bullhead – 2 of Fire
  • Footnote – Guardian of Earth
  • In Darkness – Temperance
  • Monsieur Lazhar– Priestess
  • A Separation – Explorer of Fire

Monsieur Lazhar, the Priestess has something for you. Please come to the stage.

MAKEUP

  • Albert Nobbs – 6 of Water
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2– Teacher
  • The Iron Lady – Elder of Water

WTH, Gaian? LOL. I wanted Albert Nobbs, but it looks like the Teacher has overruled me. Harry Potter it is.

Music (Original Score)

  • The Adventures of Tintin – Bindweed
  • The Artist – Ace of Fire
  • Hugo– 9 of Water
  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – Builder
  • War Horse – 8 of Water

Again, I thought the Ace of Fire was the indicator but then that 9 of Water (make a wish, heart’s desire) shows up. Hey Hugo! Come get your Oscar for the best Original Score.

Music (Original Song)

  • Man or Muppet– 6 of Air
  • Real in Rio – Hermit

Well the 6 of Air is the clear winner for me here.

Short Film (Animated)

  • Dimanche/Sunday– Ace of Fire
  • The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore – Hermit
  • La Luna – The Tree
  • A Morning Stroll – Ace of Air
  • Wild Life – 9 of Air

Two Aces show up. One of them is my pick. I’m going with the Ace of Fire this time. Dimanche/Sunday is my pick.

Short Film (Live Action)

  • Pentecost– 9 of Earth
  • Raju – 10 of Earth
  • The Shore – Tower
  • Time Freak – 7 of Water
  • Tuba Atlantic – Ace of Fire

Anyone else notice how often that Ace of Fire is showing up? Determined lil fella! Pentecost is my pick although The Shore might be a surprise upset with that Tower.

SOUND EDITING

  • Drive – Elder of Earth
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo– 2 of Water
  • Hugo – 5 of Water
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon – 8 of Air
  • War Horse – Explorer of Earth

For this, the strongest card here is the 2 of Water with its joyful celebration so I’ll go with Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

SOUND MIXING

  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Lovers
  • Hugo – Explorer of Earth
  • Moneyball– Teacher
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon – Child of Fire
  • War Horse – Death

The look of glee on the Child of Fire makes me want to call Transformers, but here I think that Moneyball is going to get the nod from the Teacher.

VISUAL EFFECTS

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – 5 of Water
  • Hugo – Temperance
  • Real Steel – Death
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes– Strength
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon – Elder of Earth

Another card that has shown up a lot is Death. But Rise of The Planet of the Apes is the winner here according to the cards.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

  • The Descendants– 9 of Earth
  • Hugo – Elder of Air
  • The Ides of March – 2 of Fire
  • Moneyball- 5 of Water
  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – 4 of Air

Well, as much as I would like to see a LeCarre-based film win, it looks like The Descendants will be taking this one.

Writing (Original Screenplay)

  • The Artist– Wheel
  • Bridesmaids – 6 of Water
  • Margin Call – 3 of Fire
  • Midnight in Paris – 7 of Fire
  • A Separation – 5 of Fire

So the Wheel of Fortune seems to indicate that The Artist will win here.

Now to see how I did. I totally lost sight of the Oscars and didn’t realize we scheduled our board meeting for tonight. WHINE! 😀
