Tarotscopes for March 29 – April 4, 2015

Gorgon Tarot Hierophant
Gorgon Tarot

Welcome to this week’s Tarotscopes. My goal is to help you find your joy and hang on to it. You can transform your existence by bringing joy back in on a regular basis. I’m here to be your joy guide.

[Tweet “Using the Gorgon #Tarot, Arwen tells us all about this week. #Seekjoy y’all. Pass it on!”]

Tired of being sad? Done with all the negativity in this world? Let’s work together to bring you back to the joy path. No time like the present to get started on your own joy seeker’s life. I’m ready to help. What’s holding you back?

This book has been so useful to me. Instead of tackling mindfulness in huge chunks, Kate Sciandra gives small bite-sized pieces. Her practice of building a habit of mindfulness is spread out over six weeks so you can learn to layer things in. I found it to be very easy to do even with my busy life. Get this juicy book today.

Did you know you can hear your full monthly Tarotscope here? Check out March’s in-depth joy journey.. April is coming up soon!

CARD OF THE WEEK: THE HIEROPHANT [inlinetweet prefix=”CARD OF THE WEEK” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]All hands on deck. Now hear this. It is time [/inlinetweet]to restablish schedules, boundaries and most importantly, reconnect with your spiritual self. Spirituality can be a mindfully imbibed cup of tea, an intentional ten minutes of prayer, a walk in the woods. It can be going back to the church that calls to you or gathering friends to circle. Whatever your spiritual house looks like, let’s get it in order, okay?

AQUARIUS QUEEN OF CUPS [inlinetweet prefix=”AQUARIUS” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Stong intuitive guides show up this week. Will you [/inlinetweet]ignore them or pay attention? Watch for repetitions of symbols. Those are the ones you need to research. Don’t blow things off this week. Your guides are hollering. Will you listen or must they get out the 2×4…again? Celebrate the Divine Feminine and listen to your Universal Mother.

PISCES HIGH PRIESTESS [inlinetweet prefix=”PISCES” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Uh oh, little fishies. Secrets are boiling up from the depths. Make sure [/inlinetweet]you don’t tell anyone something that isn’t yours to tell. Avoid gossip and gossips like the plague. You have the Universe’s permission to hold up one finger and say, “No, I can’t hear this right now.” Seek the spiritual depths of your life to attract the highest vibrations.

Gorgon Tarot Ten of Pentacles
Gorgon Tarot

ARIES TEN OF PENTACLES [inlinetweet prefix=”ARIES” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Celebrate the plenty of life. Look at your family, friends, work, home to see [/inlinetweet] how much you really have. Sometimes you get overfocused on the lack, the loss, the “not enough” of life. This week the Universe encourages you to say yes to the life you have. Time to celebrate your joys.

TAURUS KING OF PENTACLES [inlinetweet prefix=”TAURUS” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Strong financial currents are at work in your world. Are you [/inlinetweet]ready to capitalize on this? Keep your ears open for opportunities to move up in the world. Don’t be surprised if a financial plan unfolds for you that will bring you the wealth you want. Remember wealth is more than money.

GEMINI EIGHT OF WANDS [inlinetweet prefix=”GEMINI” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Now is the time to act. This week puts several opportunities [/inlinetweet]in front of you. Decisions may be hard, but if you dither, you will lose all of them. So grab the one that ignites your passion. The one that takes your breath away just thinking of the possibilities. That’s your ticket this week.

CANCER THE STAR [inlinetweet prefix=”CANCER” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Hold your head up high! You are going to be seen as much as you [/inlinetweet]already see. You are going to light the way for those around you because you do what needs doing. If you’re considering more classes, this card is a nod in that direction. The Star points the way to higher learning and to reaching goals already set.

Gorgon Tarot Wheel of Fortune
Gorgon Tarot

LEO KNIGHT OF CUPS [inlinetweet prefix=”LEO” tweeter=”@Tarotscopes” suffix=”..more #tarot”]Oh you’re a dreamer, but like John says, you’re not the only one. You [/inlinetweet]may need to rein it in just a bit so that you aren’t wandering all over the place this week. Daydreams give you a much needed break but don’t let them stop you from doing what needs to be done.

VIRGO THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE [inlinetweet prefix=”VIRGO” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]When someone offers you a cookie, take it. This week will be all about [/inlinetweet]people wanting to give you things. Take what works for you but don’t say yes to everything. And show others how to take chances. Your fortunes are looking good this week, Virgo. Spin that wheel.

LIBRA ACE OF CUPS [inlinetweet prefix=”LIBRA” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Ready for love? Ready for your heart to be full? This [/inlinetweet]is your week. If you hold your heart out there, someone will notice. Make sure you are looking for those who are also holding their hearts out. Reciprocity is the ticket for your joy this week.

SCORPIO KNIGHT OF PENTACLES [inlinetweet prefix=”SCORPIO” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Sadly things aren’t always black and white. The good news is [/inlinetweet]your money issues will be very clear cut. Someone may try to help you spend your money, but learn to say no. You can’t buy them responsibility. This is a thing they must learn on their own. Cushioning their fall removes feathers from your own nest. Put you first.

Gorgon Tarot Ace of Cups
Gorgon Tarot

SAGITTARIUS THE SUN [inlinetweet prefix=”SAGITTARIUS” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”…more #tarot”]Strong family influences take up a lot of your time this week. Will you [/inlinetweet]make time for yourself? You must you know. It’s for your own health. Family does need you, but you do better when you have gotten your rest and eaten right. Let the Sun card be your reminder that you deserve your own time in the sun.

CAPRICORN PAGE OF SWORDS [inlinetweet prefix=”CAPRICORN” tweeter=”@tarotscopes” suffix=”… more #tarot”]Decision making is never hard for a Capricorn, but this week [/inlinetweet]it may be challenging. That’s because your focus may be scatter. Open up to the idea that you can let go of some tasks. There will be others who will pick up the slack. Save yourself for the most interesting projects.

Remember to seek joy, y’all. Pass it on! I want to hear from you if you are ready to kick the negativity habit in the tender bits. Let’s get started today to create a plan for you that takes you from feeling alone to feeling alive.

REVIEW: The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread by Shannon MacLeod

So what do I think of a Tarot book that claims no memorization needed? I’ll tell you!

The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread: Cutting to the Chase, by Shannon MacLeod, illustrations by Beth Seilonen from Schiffer BooksSo today I wanted to share some thoughts on a new book by Shannon MacLeod. It’s from Schiffer. Beth Seilonen illustrated it. The book is The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread: Cutting to the Chase.

[Tweet “So what do I think of a Tarot book that claims no memorization needed? I’ll tell you!”]

First let me say that I had some reservations about this book. I wasn’t sure it could deliver. The back starts out with “Reading the Tarot doesn’t have to be hard! The Celtic Cross spread requires no long hard hours of study, no memorization, no muss or fuss–just lay out your cards, open the book, and begin!”

That’s a pretty big claim, y’all. Still I put aside my reservations to open the book. I have to say that it delivers what it offers.

Every card is interpreted in every position. The nuances of how a card’s meaning changes depending on the position it falls in is clearly highlighted.

The writing is crisp without a lot of filler. The illustrations are simple and direct. The table of contents is easy to navigate.

All in all, a very good book.

However, the one caveat I would have is that this shouldn’t be the only book you use. I don’t think being dependent on a book is a good thing. But to use this as a jumping off point? Yes, excellent.

Think of this as a primer for Tarot language. Just as you might “see Jane. See Jane run.” here you can “see the two of Swords. See the two of Swords in the past or as the outcome” to begin refining your own language skills.

I would recommend The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread: Cutting to the Chase, by Shannon MacLeod, illustrations by Beth Seilonen.

Today’s affirmation:

Today I learn. Today I increase my skills. Learning comes easily to me because I open up to the information. I am a child of the Universe therefore I am blessed. Loved and loving, I love.

Seek joy,y’all. Pass it on.

Queens in Disguise

Queens in Disguise: When queens don’t look like queens, how do we interact with them?

[Tweet “When queens don’t look like queens, how do we interact with them?”]

Mary-El Tarot Queen of Swords
Mary-El Tarot

#affirmation Today’s card is from a deck that pretty much turns traditional Tarot imagery on its head. I doubt many of us would see the Queen of Swords when we look at this image.

Two ravens perch on a tree in what seems to be a war-torn landscape. One raven has an eye on it’s wing that looks out at you. It’s an obviously human eye. The ravens make me think of Odin’s two birds,Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory).

And those are excellent choices for the air queen. Yes, this is the Queen of Swords who rules thoughts and actions based on thoughts. She’s often seen as a widow as well.

I just read my friend Susan Franklin’s newsletter. She mentioned some mindfulness workshops and practices. I hope you read it as well.

Do you do mindfulness work? Do you meditate? I am pretty much hit and miss on that. I need to work on developing this habit. I really liked what she had to say about judgment when it comes to meditation.

So today’s affirmation is this:

I am enough. I am here. This is now. This is what is important for now. I am strong. I am beautiful. I am capable. Prosperity and abundance find me. I am open to the blessings of the Universe. Loved and loving, I love each of you.

Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on.

Why I Don’t Do Resolutions Any More

Why I Don’t Do Resolutions Any More

Dream Raven Tarot, 2 of Cups
Dream Raven Tarot

There’s a reason I don’t do resolutions any more. see, I have a pet peeve. Well, I have a lot of them but there’s one in particular that just makes me snarly. And since I don’t like being snarly, I avoid people who break their promises.

The Two of Cups is a card that makes me think of kept promises but also the fragile future of a promise. So many things can come up. So many bumps that make us have to change our minds, break our promises.

A resolution, to me, is a promise I make to myself. When I inevitably break that promise, I get snarly with myself. Since I don’t like being snarly with myself, I don’t make resolutions.

[Tweet “Yes, indeedy, math truth tables by Arwen. It’s a joy I don’t do those more, right? :D”]

What I have learned is that if I create goals, I can see them in different ways. I set up specific steps to achieve them.

Are my goals resolutions?

Yes and no. Yes in that I am resolved to go them but no in that I don’t see them as promises to myself. I see them as things on my yearly to-do list.

So in a way I’m playing word games with my own head.

It works. I wasn’t doing resolutions for a long time nor was I doing goals. Then the workbook happened and I got busy. Really really busy.

Dreaming.
Creating.
Goal setting.
Celebrating success.

Was it easy? Nah…I had to make time for the work. I had to do the work. Then I had to get out of my own way.

So yes, I’m very fond of the workbook. I’m as fond of it as some of you may be sick of hearing about it from me. LOL

Rings, Stumps + Roots

The rings on this one show how many years this tree grew. How much knowledge it saw/gained. How many lives it touched.

Tree of Life Oracle Cards, Schiffer, Tree StumpToday’s card is from a deck sent to me by Schiffer. I expected one thing and got another when I opened up the Tree Of Life Oracle cards. Then when I drew randomly, I giggled.

The card is titled “Tree Stump: Pride And The Old Ways.” I skimmed the very thorough write-up in the book to see these words:

“…reminds us that enduring is opens us up to grace.”

In my beloved Gaian Tarot, the 10 of Earth features a tree stump as well. In that deck’s book, I learned that the stump is called a nursery (maybe nurse?) stump because of all the growth that happens from that one fallen giant.

The rings on this one show how many years this tree grew. How much knowledge it saw/gained. How many lives it touched.

We are all trees in the human forest. Our roots spread out to touch one another. Our branches interlace with those near by. We are a connection…a living connectivity of souls. What you do touches me. What you experience influences me.

We will all be stumps some day. I hope my rings are remembered with joy. I hope my falling will nurture others to grow into their own best self.

I think, in the long run, that’s the very best goal in life. [Tweet “To live so that my life touches others even after I’m gone.”]

Journal prompt! “What do I do today to touch others tomorrow?”

Oh Shit! What Have I Done?

Tattoo_BirthCardsToday’s card isn’t a card. It’s me showing off some new Tarot art that I picked up this weekend. The artist is Dirk Mellot of Epiphany Tattoos in Aurora, CO. No, I wasn’t in Colorado this weekend. Dirk was one of the invited artist for the Body Art Expo here in Austin. I’ve been friends with his wife for a while now so it was a prime opportunity to see him. And I decided to get a tattoo while he was here.

Dirk asked me to name two to three cards so I went with my birth cards. You can learn more about yours reading Bonnie Cehovet’s excellent book Tarot, Birth Cards, and You: Keys to Empowering Yourself (Schiffer, 2011) [aff}. Mine are the one triad. Interestingly, my best friend shares the same birth card combination.

Sitting for this was not easy. It is a large piece and the largest I have. I would love to say that I tranced out going on a beautiful metaphysical journey.

That would be a big fat lie.

It hurt. Not as bad as others because Dirk really does have a light hand, but by the end of the three hour session, I was ready to bounce off the table. 😀 I did laugh like a loon for parts of it–endorphin rush. And had to catch a pedi-cab to find where I parked my car. 🙂 Seriously.

Then when I got home, I ate, walked the dogs and crashed for about twelve hours. But I’m so glad I did this. It’s on my outer calf (right side) so anyone who sees it will know Tarot is important to me. I love that the cards are Dirk’s interpretations. The Magician is captured beautifully for me. I forgot to ask him if he meant to represent the Heiros Gamos that way.

Tattoos are one of those decisions you can’t go back on. Once the first line is laid down, you kind of have to let the artist finish. I had a serious OH SHIT moment walking the dogs this morning because this really is a large piece. I guess you could say it is a signature tattoo. It’s mine and there won’t be another like it ever. I had to wrap my mind around the fact that I just put a large “I’m different” stamp on my body where everyone could see it.

What about you? Ever make a decision that couldn’t be revoked? How did you handle that? Did you have any “oh shit what have I done” moments? How did you work through those?

In this life we are given, there will always be those “oh shit what have I done” times. The key is understanding that what’s done is done. Now you move forward.

Luckily for me, I get to move forward with a really impressive tattoo representing me and my love for the art of Tarot. No more oh shit. Just a lot of leg gazing. 😀

How A Fool Does Wander: Revisited

Mary-El_FoolToday’s card is a reminder that I need to finish something. Here is the start of what I need to finish.

I am a storyteller by nature. I write as part of the writing team of Marilu Mann with my best friend, Cai Smith. Together we have three novels currently under contract with Ellora’s Cave Publishing. (EDIT: We now have eight so you can tell how long I’ve been working on this!) You can find out more about that here if you like. I also write a column for Tarot World magazine. (UPDATE: This magazine suffered a dismal death.) That column is called Fool’s Corner which is geared towards offering information to help anyone beginning their journey with Tarot.

I wanted to tell a story about the Fool as he went about his travels through the other Major Arcana. Most Tarot decks start with 0, Zero, Void, the Fool. The Fool is so fluid as he dances through the other 21 Majors. Here is his first encounter with something other than his own brash impulsive nature. Consider how his first impulsive step hurtles him into the path of the other cards.

The day dawned sunny and bright. Our hero, known to everyone as The Fool, decided that such a lovely day deserved a journey. So he grabbed a cloth and put a few things he found important in it then twisted it up on a stick. Whistling for his companion, The Fool headed out the door.

Coming to a split in the road, The Fool had to make a decision. As he never worried too much about these things, The Fool closed his eyes and twirled about three times. Then he took the the fork in front of him.

As he sauntered down the path, he hummed a merry tune. Those notes died in his throat when he saw a strange sight. A man in robes stood before a stone table.

The Fool, never one to keep silent, blurted out, “What are all these things about you, sir? Why do you need them? I only have my dog and my bag on my stick. I trust that the Universe will provide for me as I go throught my journey. Do you?”

“Ah, young one, you have just begun and I am only the beginning. The objects you see are the Wand of Movement, the Sword of Inspiration, the Cup of Love and the Coin of Prosperity. Once I was as you were. Then I found that I could create what I wanted if I had the tools and the key.”

“The key?” The Fool perked his ears like a dog might when they sight a cat.”What is the key? Can you give me this key?”

“I can give you the name of the key, young one, but you must find it within yourself. The name is Will. You must find it for yourself or it means nothing. And all the tools in the world are nothing without it.”

The Magician turned back to his tools and focused once again. He called energy from the Earth and Sky into himself to be forged into his own Intent.

And the Fool journeyed on wondering where he might find this Will that the Magician spoke of.

As the Fool wandered down his path looking for Will. He asked a butterfly he passed if it had seen Will?

“No, but the Lady might know! Follow me!”

….Read the rest of the Fool’s Journey here.

Follow along as he meets the Major Arcana. I’m up to Judgment…. Just need to finish with the World.

Fool, Mary El Tarot, Schiffer

Have You Researched Your Fate?

GreenOracle_Ash002Today’s card is from a brand-new oracle from Schiffer Books. The deck is called the Green World Oracle. As with most decks, I opened the box and flipped through the cards. The names are associate with, wait for it, plants.

The art work works for me. A lot. It is unusual and there is a lot to be seen in every card. This one caught my eye on the first run through. Then I shuffled and drew.

And out popped Ash. That made me smile. One of my dear friends is called Ash. He’s my Thursday husband. I wasn’t sure about the women in this card. I thought they were a tri-Goddess but they didn’t fit the normal Maiden, Mother, Crone. That along with the deer in the tree (although I thought they looked like Duk Duks), I grabbed the book.

Not Duk Duk (not even sure I have that name right) but stags representing the four winds. The woman are the Norns or the Fates. The tree represents Yggdrasil which is a tree I associate with the Hanged Man (Odin hanging from Yggdrasil).

So there is a lot in this book for each card. I mean, a lot.
The mythology, the botany, the meaning of the card and then there are footnotes. No, I’m not kidding. In the seven pages dedicated to this one card, there are twenty-three footnotes.

This is in-depth, y’all. Based on this one card alone, I would recommend this deck to those interested in the magic of our natural world. It’s only got thirty-three (now there’s a magical number) cards but it ranges from the Greeks to the Norse to the African to the Japanese. I’d say it covers the world from my cursory look.

These three women remind me that those heroes of old were the ones who were fated to do something and did it their own way. Many of them “beat Fate” as it were.

How do you live your life? As if your Fate were already sealed or as if you were captain of your own ship? How would your life change if you knew someone else was driving?

I think the truly brave are those crazy enough to understand that we were each given lives/ships to take our journey in but where we go is up to us.

So where will you go today? Will you tempt the Fates by doing things your way? Will you please the Universe by living a well-lived life?

Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on.

Do You Fly Into Mudbanks?

MaoriOracle_Kekerewai001Today’s card is not a Tarot card. It is from a new oracle that honors a specific way of life. I’ve specifically chosen this card because it’s a reminder I need today.

You see, I’ve been suffering (and making everyone around me suffer along with me) from a back issue. I’m going to have an MRI done. The procedure includes an iodine injection. I’m not sure why but it amps up my stress. I’m already a basket case because of the MRI. I’m extremely claustrophobic.

So in addition to the pain (which makes me cranky), I’ve been allowing that stress of the coming MRI to just send me into the stratosphere. Add to that the muscle relaxer that I’m only taking when I must, and you have a really moody joy seeker. REALLY FREAKING MOODY. It’s a wonder anyone talks to me at all right now. LOL

Because of the stress, I took a day off from my 40hr a week job. I relaxed and did some video reviews. One of them was for this deck[aff]. You can see that here –> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3yLYHO5BtE <–

As I looked at the cards, I pulled the ones that visually interested me. One was this card. I laughed when I read the meaning.

“Some of your ways may be keeping you where you don’t want to be.”

Yah thanks Universe. I didn’t want that slap upside the noggin but I certainly deserved it and needed it.

I am, as my grandmother would remind me, borrowing trouble. I don’t KNOW that the MRI will be bad. I THINK it will be. I IMAGINE it will be.

I’m creating my own 9 of Swords anxiety-ridden, tail-chasing vortex of fear.

Sigh.

So I must not be this little Maori beetle. Because it refuses to change its flight path, it often flew into mud banks which allowed it to be caught and eaten.

Uh, yeah…I get it. I get it.

Change my view. Change my position. Change my thinking.

I’m on it, Universe.

Today’s mantra is…

“Today I am focused on learning new ways of finding joy. I discard outmoded ways of thinking that emphasize negativity. I embrace seeing life in the most positive ways. I breathe in. I breathe out. I love. I am loved. I understand that pain is my body’s cry for help. I will honor my body by seeking that help. Seek joy, y’all. Pass it on.”
