Tarot&Food: Arwen’s Oeufs à la Diable

“It’s that ole devil called love again
Gets behind me and keeps giving me that shove again
Putting rain in my eyes
tears in my dreams
and rocks in my heart.”

Now that song’s been sung by some of the greatest singers ever to grace our world — Ella Fitzgerald and Miss Billie Holliday just to name two.

Then we have the Rolling Stones and Guns-n-Roses chiming in with

“Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man’s soul and faith

Yeah, the Devil even went down to Georgia according to Charlie Daniels. So what recipe could this Tarot card be paired with? Let’s explore the Devil card a bit first, shall we?

One of the “scary” cards, or what I call the Big, Bad Behometh cards, the Devil can evoke a visceral response of fear in some. I mean many of us were raised with the Christian mythos as our way of life so this card can bring up those memories as well.

But the Devil, in the Tarot, represents our attachment to things of physical pleasure. It can show an addiction to things that aren’t good for us in the long run. Often you see two people chained to the podium where the Devil stands. Those chains are important. Some would say that the Devil hands you the chains but you put them on and leave them there.

I read another reader who mentioned that she saw the Devil (sometimes) as the “Calgon, take me away” ™ card. She meant that it could be a call to give in to a bit of physical pleasure. Moderation in all things. Especially moderation, right?

Now, about that recipe. What would you pair with the Devil? I thought of a sinfully good creme brulee or maybe a syrupy flan. But then it hit me. There’s this one thing that I make that I can’t resist eating too much of. I know for a fact that I will not feel good if I overeat. I know for a fact that others will blame me for their overeating of this as well. I can’t help it. My Deviled Eggs are the bomb. I actually had someone begin a relationship with me after trying them. Kid you not! 🙂

Now then! First off you have to understand that this mixture is done PURELY to taste and it is my taste so your version may turn out vastly different. But that’s ok!

Arwen’s Deviled Eggs

Makes 24

1 dozen eggs
Miracle Whip DO NOT SUBSTITUTE MAYONNAISE!!!!!!!!!
Sweet Pickle juice
Mustard
Horseradish (not the creamy stuff)
Pepper
Salt
White Vinegar

Boil the eggs. To prevent cracking, put a TBS of vinegar in the water. Add the eggs to COLD water, not hot!

Peel the eggs. Easiest to do with very fresh eggs under running water. Sacrifice the bad ones to the kids, the partners, yourself, the dogs, the cats, the birds, etc. Bad ones are defined as the ones that don’t peel beautifully. Salt and Pepper on hand with paper towels will make these sad rejects go away fast.

Cut the good eggs in half. I use a small paring knife and cut to the yolk but not through it. Slice around the yolk and then remove one side of the egg. The yolk will look grey-green on the outside. Pop that out into a bowl. Save the yolks! Oh and save a bad egg or two as well. Throw them in the yolk bowl. I’ll tell you why later.

Do yourself a favor and start out with the serving tray to line your eggs up on. If you are a true Southern Belle, then you have at least one egg plate. Not a Belle? You can still buy an egg plate, for goodness sake! It’s like not having an iced tea pitcher.

Don’t even tell me you don’t have an ice tea pitcher. Oh my heart!

Once all the eggs are halved and lined up, take a fork or a potato masher and smoosh the yolks into a pulp. Add large dollops of Miracle Whip until it’s stiff but not smooth yet. And I’m serious about that no mayo rule. You can put mayo in if you like, but you can’t say they are my Deviled Eggs any more. *spit* Yes, I feel that strongly about the Miracle Whip vs Mayonnaise debate.

Now add 2-3 TBS of the pickle juice. Mix that in well. Note that all you are adding here is the juice. You can toss in some relish if you must, but that’s on your head, not mind. LOL

Add 2-3 TBS of the horseradish. Mix in well.

Add 2 TBS of mustard. Mix in well.

Salt and Pepper to taste.

Taste the mixture. If it is too sweet, add some horseradish. If it is too sharp, add some Miracle Whip. Once it tastes good to you, spoon the mixture into the eggs. If you want to be fancy, pipe it in.

I don’t sprinkle paprika on at the end. Don’t like it and don’t think it does that much for the eggs over all other than make them look pretty.

Oh. Substituting chili powder for paprika? Not a good idea. Don’t ask me how I know.

These truly are devilishly good. 😀

Another note! If you have more filling than eggs (it happens), make pinwheel roll-ups or just call it egg salad and throw it on some bread!
