SPREAD: Two Geisha Spreads

Someone on AT’s Tarot Forum was requesting a Geisha spread. I kept coming back to the question and thinking about it. What would a spread that used Geisha as a theme look like? My first instinct was a fan.

While I was researching the hierarchy of the geisha lifestyle, I realized that there were two places that were important to the geisha. The first was the okiya or house the geisha dwelled in. The other was the o-chaya or teahouse where they entertained. My next thought was which phases of the geisha went with which house.

So I played around a bit with things I found on the web. I have no clue if my geisha resources were correct in their discussions. I tried to choose what felt right. If anyone knows otherwise, please tell me and cite your source so I can get the book! Grin, I love research.

Life Of The Geisha Spread

  1. Okiya: (House where geisha live) This is your environment. What is going on there that you need to pay attention to.
  2. Hashi: (Highest ranking geisha) What can you achieve?
  3. Hogasha: (Teacher/Protector) Who holds this role in your life?
  4. Danna: (Person with money) Where does your money come from?
  5. O-chaya: (Tea house) This is where the geishas offer entertainment. What do you need to work on for your self improvement?
  6. Maiko: (Apprentice) What do you need to learn?
  7. Tayu: (known for their flamboyance) What are your extravagances?
  8. Shikomi: (Servant status) What is hardest for you right now? This is what you must suceed at.

Life Of A Geisha spread

This spread is laid out to resemble two houses next to each other. The first is the tea house–the outer house. The second is the Okiya which is where the geisha live.

The second spread came from the first. I wanted something more oriented towards career since, in a way, the geisha was one of Japan’s first working girls (and, no, I do not mean prostitute). So I took some of the positions of the geisha again and used them in slightly different ways. Some of them are very similar to the ones above.

  5. Onee-San: (Senior Geisha/Older Sister) Who is helping you? Who should you be listening to more?

P to the S, y’all! Marilu Mann, my uber cool alter ego, has a novella coming out in September called Sapphire Tease that features a geisha’s hairpiece. Seems someone’s there to steal it and someone isn’t going to let that happen.
