Character Reading: Cameron MacPherson

Today I read for Cameron MacPherson, the hero of Legend of the White Wolf by Terry Spear. Terry writes rich books full of stunning setting and detailed lore. You can’t read one of her books and not watch over your shoulder to see if you can catch a shifter on the run. She’s good, y’all.

And busy! This fellow Texas author (also a transplant) is a retired US Army  Reserves Light Bird  aka Lieutenant Colonel who likes to make bears when she’s not writing or teaching workshops.  Visit Terry at her site!

So here’s the reading! Don’t miss the contest at the end!

1. How do you see the people around you?

You seem to pity them and resent them. You know they can never have the kind of bond you do with your family but it hurts to see them have any bond. Are you apart from those you love, Cameron?

This card is about loss of home and family but even more than that, it is about loss of your spiritual self. I would think that your personal guide has left you or you think it (they?) has/have.

There is one that you watch though. That one is different and you think maybe you could come in out of the cold for that person. But you will have to knock on that door first.

And that’s the hard part, isn’t it. Asking for help from those you resent.

Cameron’s Response:

I never really thought I had resented my best friend Gavin’s relationship with his dad, but, I suppose in retrospect I might have. Truth be told, my dad was nothing to brag about. Womanizer, gambler, carouser, all around deadbeat and when he died in a car accident, I didn’t feel any remorse. My mother died when I was young. So Gavin’s father became my surrogate dad.

I admired his dad—a true hero in my eyes. A good father who served as a police officer and helped those in need. Then Gavin and my world caved in. His father was killed in a robbery shootout.

When my dad died, I felt relief. I was given a new purchase on life. A decent family to live with. When Gavin’s father succumbed to his injuries, I felt a part of me died with him.

So, I did what Gavin did, joined the police force. And now Gavin and I and Owen, whose father was a mean-spirited alcoholic and in jail more than out of it, and David, who had always had a sense of adventure, joined the police force together, and then later became partners in a private investigator’s business. I have to say though, that before I met Faith, I couldn’t honestly feel fatherhood might be for me. That’s all changed now. So a good start, don’t you think?

2. How are you seen by the people around you?

Justice is blind and often very swift. You are the one who has to mete out the punishment. You may not get to judge whether the punishment is right or not. Your job is to deliver the message…or coup de grace when necessary.

Cameron, even your own people fear you for this geas you carry of justice. You are very black and white about this issue, aren’t you? No room for grey in your world.

Remember that Justice is also balanced. People around you might not fear you so much if you would let them se that other side of you.

Cameron’s Response:

I’m not sure about that. I’ve always felt I would give someone the benefit of the doubt, but then again, maybe it’s the difficulty I have with relating to my father. I never could see any “good” side to him, no matter how I tried. I suspect it somewhat colored my view of the bad guys I’ve made it a calling to hunt down in my line of work, either as a police officer, or a private investigator. I suppose I’ve become somewhat jaded with having to deal with the slimier side of life. Faith has truly been a breath of fresh air for me.

3. What is your most important goal?
Peace. You just want peace in your world. You are hurting on the inside and, I think, you may also be physically injured somehow. The 4 of Swords is the card of healing after a battle.

You seek sanctuary for yourself so you can just take some much needed time out. Not time off. Time out. You want to retreat from the world for a bit.

Again I see the stained glass in this card. Spirituality has a strong call for you. Almost as though the killer wants to be a priest…that kind of retreat. But I think that horse in the background (on the left upper part) means you have a journey to make before you can find that peace.

Cameron’s Response:

Not something I usually talk about, but I took a bullet when I served as a police officer in Seattle. But that didn’t turn my world upside down as much as the wolf tearing into me in Maine. Hell, who knew how that would change my life? And Faith’s.

But you’re right about wanting peace. It’s why I do the job I do, trying to make for a more peaceful world. I’ve worked so many hours for so long, trying to avoid dealing with past relationships and work and family issues, getting snowbound with Faith in a cabin built for two, gave me a new lease on life. I realized just how much I was missing, and that she’s truly a salve for the soul.

4. Where do you get your strength from?
I love this card. It is about learning and teaching and sharing. An odd card for someone others fear but you have a Leo’s love of showing how it’s done. You like to train others in your field because you can give them a sense of ethics and morality….maybe your own teacher never did that for you.

This is about your insatiable need to know. Curiosity is a strong point for you, but I expect that your inquisitive nose has gotten you into trouble a time or two.

Cameron’s Response:

Ah, so true! In the line of work I do, it’s par for the course, investigating crimes and the like. I feel strongly about abiding by the law, and Faith, dealing with her own issues, tends to take situations into her own hands that are…well, let’s say, a little above the law. I remind her of this on occasion, to keep her out of trouble. She’s a wonder though, teaching me about forensic medicine that I never knew. She’s a keeper.

Even though I feel David, Gavin and Owen are my equals, they often look to me for guidance, so I suppose I have something to offer them in the line of advice as it relates to our work. Now because I’m the first one turned in our newly formed werewolf pack, everyone tends to look to me for help even more. I might not always have the answer, but I’m determined to keep us together and safe.

5. Why do you want to be remembered?
The 3 of Cups is a card of emotional growth and transition. It is an interesting peek underneath all that Leo ferocity most people see. You have a true love for people and want to be remembered as someone who fostered real and positive change in their lives.

I have to admit that this is an unusual card in that it doesn’t seem to fit the rest of reading. It is almost as though you have a secret charity that you fund or a pet project where you are the secret benefactor.

Cameron’s Response:

I suppose it’s my need to protect my partners, who are like family to me, but without looking as though I’m being a mother hen. Does that make sense? And now that Faith has joined the partnership, I’ve got my hands full. It’s not only the partnership in the private investigator business that keeps me on alert though, as regards to the safety of my partners.

It’s that we are now a new pack of werewolves, who are attempting to locate a home of our own, away from other pack territories and start up our PI operation again. But no matter what, we’ll stick together, all for one, and one for all.

  1. Thanks, Arwen, for this great reading! I have to say I was pretty worried about this. Arwen warned me that Cameron’s reading indicated he waivered between being an assassin and a priest. 🙂 So what do you think? After careful consideration, and sharing his darkest secrets, is he a hero in your eyes?

Thanks again, Arwen! I couldn’t have had more fun doing this!!

  2. This is a unique way of interpreting your characters! I have never ever thought of this! I shall have to try this.
and yes I am twittering this. Thanks!

  3. Cameron sounds like the ideal alpha – caring, strong, protective, loyal, intelligent – not to mention hot! Wow, can I meet him? 🙂
(I do want the book though! ha ha)

  4. Enjoyed reading the comments. I don’t know much about the Tarot cards so was interesting to me. The books of Terry sound good too.

  5. This is the most original post I’ve seen. Love it, Arwen! I’m fascinated by tarot, but never learned to read. I had a reading done for myself once. Let’s say my uniqueness came out during the reading.

Terry, Cameron is definitely a hero. We all have deep, dark secrets, but they shape who we are and the decisions we make. He chooses to be a good guy so he is.

  6. Tarot readings by someone with a true talent can tell you much about yourself. We all struggle with the different aspects of ourselves. A true hero merely does what needs to be done, what they know is the right thing to do in spite of inner demons and fears. They Overcome and Adapt. Cameron is a true hero in every sense of the word.

  7. Sounds interesting, I haven’t read any books like this. I look forward to a great read.
    Thank You.

  8. This was very original and fun. I’d say Terry’s Cameron is a hero . I think he’s very strong, caring man. And very loyal and he’s a very protective nature. And very Sexy Hero too. I have already read the book. And It’s great.

  9. Thanks, ladies!

Ahh, Cate, I’m so glad you found Cameron heroic! And yes, you can definitely meet him, take him home with you, and keep him! LOL!!!

Thanks, Joye! It was fun! I hope you try out the new release!

Emma Lai, I so agree, and a darker, or more emotional past, makes for a more interesting character! 🙂 You’re so very right.

Thanks so much, Pam Owldreamer! I couldn’t have said it better! I always remember the comment made that a hero is not someone who rescues a kid from drowning, but someone who is deathly afraid of the water and rescues the kid from drowning. 🙂

Oh, wow, April, how interesting! My son just joined the USAF and is at the officer basic (or whatever they call it in the AF) in Alabama for the next six weeks. Enjoy your tour in San Angelo! And hope you love the books!

Diva Donna, thanks so much! I’m thrilled you loved him! 🙂 Now if only August would get here so you could see what happens to Leidolf when he tangles with another red in Seduced by the Wolf! 🙂

  10. Arwen, another interesting reading. I think you’ve peeled back a few layers on Cameron, perhaps exposed some underbelly he doesn’t want to share with anyone. Yet he becomes stronger by acknowledging his need and appreciation of his relationships with those he loves. Very penetrating reading, i’d say. t

  11. Wow, the reading was very interesting. I love the idea of doing them for characters. Cameron sounds like a great hero, definitely someone I’d like to read about. =)

  12. Thanks, ladies. And thanks, Sarah! I’ve used astrological signs for characters before and thought it was fun comparing hero and heroine’s traits… I did this in the YA The Vampire…In My Dreams. 🙂

  13. This is the first time I’ve come here. I love this idea. It’s fun reading character interviews and a lot of authors are doing that these days. I like this twist on that. And this book is very prominently at the Top of my TBB list just waiting for next week.

  14. Hi Beth! Thanks so much!! I can’t wait to hear what you think of the book. I loved this, too! A fun twist on character assassination, I mean, exploration. 🙂

  15. All of Terry’s book are great reads, I just got Legend today, and have plans of hot chocolate , cozy bed and an all night reading session.
